Sri Yantra
One of the oldest sacral symbols of humanity and the archetype of the Universe. It represents the forces that shape all forms in the Universe through two opposing forces: Shiva – the masculine energy, and Shakti – the feminine energy. It also acts as a connection between the Universe (macro cosmos) and a human (micro cosmos) and promotes awakening of the Higher Self.
Energy of Sri Yantra is often used in rituals and magic ceremonies, amuletes and mascots, protecting the wearer as well as giving strength and mystical powers.
Being the instrument of Lakshmi – the goddess of wealth, fortune, and prosperity – Sri Yantra brings luck, good fortune and wealth.
Structure
Made of nine interlocking triangles that radiate outwards from the center point known as bindu point. Four upward triangles represent the masculine energy of Shiva, while the downward-pointing triangles represent the feminine energy of Shakti. Overlapping of 9 triangles form 43 small triangles. Each small triangle represents its own energy with its own characteristics.
The nine triangles form a 16-pointed star enclosed with 8 and then 16 petals, which in turn are enclosed by a protective square known as Bhupure with 4 gates facing 4 directions of the world.
History
History of appearance of this symbol goes deep beyond centuries and is shrouded with a great mystery. First documental mentioning of Sri Yantra can be found in Atharvaveda (1200B.C.) – there you can find a hymn dedicated to the ritual image formed by nine interlocking triangles. However, the American physicist Dr. Patrick Flanagan estimates that the age of the powerful sign is more than 12000 years.
The members of Biology faculty of higher nervous activity at the Moscow State University proved that Sri Yantra has a huge influence on psychology of a human. Experiments showed that even short-term fixation of the eye sight on the symbol slows down the activity of the left brain hemisphere which is responsible for logical thinking, while activating the right brain hemisphere which is responsible for creative enlightenment and intuition. Similar states of consciousness can be experienced during mystical rituals and psychedelic substances.
Application
Yantras in general serve as tools for focus concentration or symbolic imagery of energy structures of various Gods, as seen by the seers. When yantra is used in ritual and it is filled with energy, it becomes the symbolic manifestation of that God.
Yoga enthusiasts claim that regular sessions with Sri Yantra use help restore bio field or human aura, and help activate the high chakras – Sahasrara, Ajna, Visuddha, Anahata.
During Sri Yantra meditation, the process of gazing starts from the farthest geometrical forms which represent dense-materialistic forces or manifestation of the Higher Reality, and gradually moves to the center passing more subtle planes of creation and finally reaching the Source of everything. Thus, the process of nivriti is perceived through convolution of the Universe into its original unmanifested state. Through such process of meditation, the yogi gradually realizes one’s unity with Universe in its purest form. Such meditation leads yogi towards attainment of samadhi state of consciousness – the superconscious bliss.
Meditation
The meditation with Sri Yantra starts by focusing on one of the corners of the symbol and gradually moving clockwise along the lines until making a circle. Then, the focus is shifted towards the circle with 16 petals and the moving process is repeated. Then the 8 petal circle. Further, 4 rings of triangles, and finally the adept reaches the Bindu – center point, where one stops the eyesight for 15-20 minutes. After that, the meditator closes the eyes and focuses on Sri Yantra inside one’s head until it fades. That’s when the mediation is considered over.
